Statistics for immigrant habeas cases filed since 2025

To help journalists, advocates, and the public track the scale of immigrant habeas corpus filings, we are making our internal statistical tracking available to everyone. This is a convenient way to see the volume of cases we are observing on the ground.

We have created a publicly accessible Google Spreadsheet that automatically updates every day. It provides a breakdown of the total number of immigrant habeas corpus cases filed over time and across different federal districts. Our database begins on January 20, 2025, and tracks right up to the present.

Here is what you will find inside the spreadsheet:

  • Nationwide Weekly Trends: A summary sheet (using a pivot table) that shows the total number of cases filed across the entire country with a week-by-week resolution.
  • Monthly District Summaries: A separate summary sheet providing monthly figures for each specific federal district and overall totals.
  • Raw Data: We also include sheets with the raw district totals broken down by both month and week.

To make sure the numbers reflect reality, we do basic data cleaning. We actively deduplicate the dockets by removing cases that were filed in error when a valid case under the same name proceeds.

Before you use these numbers for reporting or research, please start by reading the 'Information' sheet. It contains several caveats that you'll want to be aware of, interpreting this data.
